Why insurers now demand approved car security

Insurers increasingly require approved trackers and immobilisers — fitted by approved installers — before covering prestige cars. Here's what that means for you.

Insurer Requirements

Cover now often comes with conditions.

With vehicle theft rising and prestige models heavily targeted, insurers have tightened up. For high-value and high-risk vehicles, many now require an insurance-approved tracker — and in some cases an immobiliser too — as a flat condition of cover. For certain cars in certain areas, some insurers have stepped back from offering cover at all without it.

The detail that catches owners out is the word "approved". It isn't enough to have a device fitted; for the policy to stand, it usually has to be installed and certified by an approved, accredited installer. A cheap fit by an unaccredited fitter can leave you holding a certificate that doesn't satisfy your insurer — and a claim that's refused at the worst possible moment.

As a TASSA-approved, DBS-checked engineer and an approved Autowatch Ghost and Meta Trak dealer, I fit and certify to the standard insurers recognise. Send me your insurer's wording and I'll confirm exactly what you need to be compliant.
